Books by John and Paula Sandford and family . . .
The Sandfords are prayer ministry pioneers. John is also a leading figure in the restoration of the prophetic office to today's church. Their books on inner healing and prophetic ministry are essential reading for pastors, teachers, prophets, healers, counselors, intercessors - in fact, for anyone involved in ministry. Books by their sons Loren and Mark are also very helpful for particular aspects of ministry and worship.
Many of these are available at major Christian book stores. However, if you find difficulty in obtaining them, or, like many people these days, you enjoy the convenience and speed of shopping online, we have made a selection available here through the world's largest bookstore - Amazon.com. The first book the Sandfords wrote has become a classic of prophetic ministry: The Elijah Task. One reviewer, Melvyn Lee from Malaysia said this: "Pain, trial and persecution are normal process encountered while growing in the prophetic. Times twice of that defines the preparation process one needs to go through when one grows in the office of a prophet.
"John Sanford is definitely a season prophet. However he has not graduated from the School of the Holy Spirit. It takes patience to learn all of God's ways. In "Elijah Task", John described how he and his wife has to go through some of the most severe testing while being trained to be a prophet. When you recognized your calling as a prophet, cutting corners is never the chosen path. From John's experience, prophets are at the peak of their training during the trough of their lives. In other words, the making of a prophet's ministry usually take place in the darkest moment of his life. The end result God desires is humility and brokenness. Only then He can use His prophets to complete His divine task. "
"In Elijah Among Us: Understanding and Responding to God's Prophets Today John Sandford updates what he began in The Elijah Task. Read the publisher's assessment of this book:
"Twenty-five years after the release of his ground-breaking book The Elijah Task, co-authored with his wife, Paula, a sequel comes from the powerful pen of John Sandford. In Elijah Among Us, he outlines a biblically rooted discussion of prophetic history and functioning, both how to instruct prophets and commission their office and how to inform the church about prophetic ministry. Sandford wrote this follow-up book because he sees a strong and even dangerous overemphasis in the church on the "giving of personal words," which is only one role of the prophetic office. The first section of this book develops a history of the prophetic office, how the office metamorphosed from one of warning into proclaiming God's gentle and merciful side, and becoming burden-bearers. Second, Sandford sets forth the working functions of prophets, explaining how they serve in twelve major roles, including bringing blessings, healing, warning of impending judgment, giving protection from tragedies, and offering direction, guidance, or confirmation. Readers will gain crucial knowledge of a widely misunderstood topic, helping them be discerning in these strategic end times. Authoritative and compelling, Elijah Among Us is a timely and vital work for the Body of Christ."
The Transformation of the Inner Man is one of the most important prayer ministry books you could ever read. A reader from Ihio said: "John and Paula Sandford are to be applauded for their dedication to God and His principals. They have shown great wisdom in their approach to the many issues we face in the busy days of modern living. Having put many of their suggestions to the test, I can state that John and Paula are not only Biblically sound; they are practical as well. Their teaching is setting people free throughout the world."
I agree. This and their following book Healing the Wounded Spirit are the core of any prayer ministry library. Healing the Wounded Spirit is for everyone who suffers from hurts--past or present. God can help you to discern a wounded spirit in yourself and others, and, best of all, He will show you how to receive His healing power in your life.
The material from these classic books is being updated in a new series called The Transformation Series. The first two books in this new series has been published. The first is Transforming the Inner Man: God's Powerful Principles for Inner Healing and Lasting Life Change. The second is God's Power to Change: Healing the Wounded Spirit. I highly recommend them to anyone in the healing or counselling ministry.
Given John Sandfords lifetime ministry as a well tested prophet, I found their semi-autobiographical book Prophets, Healers and the Emerging Church fascinating and a source of many insights for the future of prophetic ministry and the church.
Loren Sandford, John and Paula's eldest son and a pastor, wrote Purifying the Prophetic: Breaking Free from the Spirit of Self-Fulfillment, an important book about how to minister with and care for prophetic people. He has just followed it up with Understanding Prophetic People: Blessings and Problems with the Prophetic Gift. I believe everyone involved in prophetic ministry needs to read both of these books.
Other essentials for your library are: A Comprehensive Guide to Deliverance and Inner Healing by John and Mark Sandford, The Renewal of the Mind by John and Loren Sandford.
If you haven't yet read any of these books then you still have a lot to learn about prayer ministry, and who better to learn from, after the Holy Spirit of course, than from these writers who have learned from Him for so many years.
